Career

  • First YF-12A; first flown from Groom Lake by Lockheed test pilot James D. 'Jim' Eastham
  • Only YF-12A to wear Air Defense Command markings
  • Its rear fuselage survives as part of SR-71C 61-7981 'The Bastard'

Fate

Damaged beyond repair on 14 August 1966 at Edwards AFB in a landing mishap with a brake fire. Its rear half was joined to the front half of a static test airframe to create the only SR-71C, 61-7981 (USAF 64-17981), now at the Hill Aerospace Museum, Utah.

Where the record disagrees

Article/constructor number 1001 is from secondary sources. SR-71 serials are often written 61-79xx (from the tail number 179xx) but the official USAF serial block is 64-17950 to 64-17981.
